Fall Trip Day 15 Encore

I couldn't leave this string of trip posts without including photo's of Western Kansas.
I stayed in Western KS last night then made a couple of stops prior to arriving home at 3 PM.  Ellis, KS is not only the boyhood home to Walter P. Chrysler, but also to Gary Kroeger, a famous Kansan now living in Lecompton, KS.

Fall Trip Day Fourteen

Left Manitou Springs just west of Colorado Springs this morning.  No, I didn't venture up to Pikes Peak but kept my touristing to the Ghost Town Museum (worth the visit) and a drive around the Broadmore Hotel and Golf Course.  This is OLD MONEY and the entire area is eye opening and very well kept up.

Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City flow together and are the places to go in the Colorado Springs area..  This is where I stayed last night.

To get through Colorado Springs and head back east, I plugged into the GPS, Cheyenne Wells in far Eastern Colorado and off I went.  I cruised along on the deserted 2-lane highways in the range of 85 mph.  I stopped at Fort Morgan at the most westerly county in Kansas and thought I'd never get out.  I had my own personal guided tour by two elderly guides.  I noticed I was the first to sign the guest book in 4 days, (see photos).

I am staying at a mom and pop motel in Western Kansas and will head home tomorrow.  I don't anticipate another blog entry with this trip.  I think everyone has already seen a truck stop like the ones on I-70 in Salina.

Thanks to all for following........Dave

Fall Trip Day Thirteen

Central Colorado represents most of Colorado, except for places like Denver.
I left Gunnison traveling east on US 50 through Salidas and on to Cripple Creek on 'back roads'.  I ended up on US 24 at Woodland Park  that starts the decline down into Colorado Springs and goes by Pikes Peak.
I am staying at "Historic Downtown" Manitou Springs, also known for the Garden of the Gods and adjacent "Historic Colorado City".

The weather has been perfect as you can see by the photos.

Fall Trip Day Twelve

I was in Colorado soon after leaving Utah this morning.  The signs had been changed and no longer read HW 666.  I was welcomed at the State Line without much fanfare, in fact, I figured I had entered Western Kansas instead.  Even the "Colorful Colorado" sign had white letters on a brown background (see photo).

Most of the leaves have fallen, but the few aspen leaves left offer some really great landscapes.  Telluride is right up there for the rich and famous.  Renovation work is going on all over town for both residential and commercial buildings.  They definitely have a strict building code that follows the Craftsman Style of Architecture.
Gunnison is my home for tonight and also for Western State Colorado University.  No matter how you leave town, you have fantastic views and drives..

Located due center and the business hub in this part of CO is Montrose.  I didn't take any photos due to the task at hand called traffic.  Suburbia and franchises extend for miles, a bit disappointing from what I remembered years ago.

Fall Trip Day Eleven

Utah all day again.  A leisurely day with beautiful weather, not moving very far in the grand scheme of things.  Fell into a little group of travelers all with diverse modes of transportation, I could write a short story on the variety that exists among us.
I'm in the small town of Monticello, Utah tonight about 15 miles from the Colorado border.  The map reads US 666 but both states changed the number to something else due to the association with the Devil.  I'll let you know if they changed all the signs in tomorrows blog.
For those of you from KS, you'll know that the zip code in Topeka is 666xx.  This might explain a few things.

In the morning I'll leave Utah to make a bee line through CO trying to hit roads not previously traveled on for the most part.  Goal is to get home on Saturday.

Fall Trip Day Ten

Bryce Canyon and Highway 12 in Utah
By the map, I didn't go very far, but I'll tell you, I stopped a lot and enjoyed the drive a whole lot!
